Hearing Impaired
Hearing loss and hearing impairment are terms used to describe a wide range of hearing losses that occur due to a problem with one or more parts of the ear. On one end of the hearing loss spectrum are children who are completely deaf cannot hear sound at all. On the other end of this spectrum are children with less severe hearing loss, who can hear to some extent.
The treatment for hearing loss depends on the cause of the loss. In some cases surgery can restore or correct hearing loss. In other cases medication may help. Sometimes a hearing aid is recommended. And there are other types of hearing loss that cannot be treated.
When treatment is an option, it should start as early as possible - even when the child is as young as six months old. Early treatment of hearing loss can allow many infants to develop normal language skills without delay.
